you know we know president obama, as they know no drama obama president, the severity of this and tragedy of this have not gone unexamined but there isn't the hysteria that we might have worried about. i think one thing you have to say, we know about the carpenter nails, for example, now that law enforcement and public officials have been keeping the public informed since this incident happened. they may not tell us every detail of what chronological picture they are put together, whether it's a domestic event, international event, event that combines domestic and international, with an individual or somebody in a network because they are looking at everything. eventually they will put the pieces together. it's going to take time. but they're keeping us informed and that's a very important part of the dialogue that we're having now. >> karen greenberg, tom fuentes, thanks to both of you. response helps with the recovery and investigation. that's what we're doing now at this minute. thanks for watching special coverage of the bombings here in boston continues after this break. >>> welcome

and they are saying that at least preliminarily a letter that was sent to president obama and received on tuesday at an offsite mail facility has tested positive for ricin. when mail goes to the white house, it doesn't actually go to the white house first. it does go to an offsite facility. this is the same case with capitol hill. keep in mind and i know our joe johns has been reminding us of this, there are people that have to process it. and obviously ricin is a very dangerous substance. so there's certainly concern there about the people who had to process this, but this was intercepted on tuesday. and the big question now is, is there a connection here between this letter, this one letter and the other letter sent to senator wicker and the bombings that happened in boston on monday? it certainly is remarkable timing and really makes you question that. jay carney, the white house press secretary was asked about this during a briefing a short time ago. and he wouldn't rule out that there was a connection. i think the reason a lot of people are asking is the bombings happened about 3:

the obama administration said 48 hours, but that's simply their interpretation. now, this hole miranda issue though i think we can overstate its importance. all miranda does is restrict whether those statements can be used against tsarnaev himself in a court case. they can still use all this other evidence that they have against him. so they may simply decide we're not going to use these statements at all. we're going to prove our case with other evidence. >> true, jeff. >> but then it doesn't matter. >> i'm curious about the voluntary statements. if he offers something up, can't that also be used as opposed to bringing it out in interrogation? >> yes, although it would be difficult to say that an intubated sedated person suddenly decided to write out answers to questions. i think it's quite clear he's being questioned here. the real issue is does the government want to use those answers in court or do they simply want to use it to continue their investigation, which they certainly have every right to do. >> but there's one other issue that relates -- >> go ahead

obama, governor and mrs. patrick, mayor and mrs. menino, all of us in this space and well beyond are grateful for your constant and inspired leadership. your compassionate presence is a signal of the triumph of order over chaos, of love over hatred. the gifted columnist anna quindland wrote, "grief remains one of the few things that has the power to silence us. it is a whisper in the world and a clamber within. the landscapes of all our lives become as full of craters as the surface of the moon." we would wish our prayers this morning to hold not only the city and its souls in our embrace, but to extend our reach to kindred spirits in newtown and now, sadly, in west, texas. our message to them is that our arms are wide enough to hold you in our hearts as well. a rabbi once said -- [ speaking in foreign language ] the entire world is a narrow bridge, but the important principle is -- [ speaking in foreign language ] -- the important principle is to transcend somehow your fear. as we share our grief for those who have lost life or lim
